The Ultimate Family Vacation in Hawaii

Big Island Adventure, Cuisine, Sport and Relaxation

There is nothing more exotic than a tropical destination vacation. The Big Island of Hawaii is the absolute perfect match for an adventurous beach and lush oasis. There are a few key items to take into account when planning the perfect family vacation in Hawaii. Here is a Cuvée’s curated guide to the best family vacation on Hawaii’s Big Island.

Big Island Moniker

The island of Hawaii is the youngest and largest island in the Hawaiian chain and it is nearly twice as big as all of the other Hawaiian Islands combined (hence, its nickname, “Big Island”).

Warm Beach and Volcanic Snow

There are four different climate zones on the islands. It can be a tropical monsoon or a snow-day on the massive Maunakea volcanoes. Warm, ocean winds can give way to sunny, 80-degree, blue-sky days for weeks on end. There is great variety in climate.

Wild Landscape

There are stunning, lush valleys in the Hilo and Hamakua Coasts. Jet-black sand is eye-popping as it shimmers from Punaluu Beach. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is a stunning example of how the island chains were formed. The Big Island is also known as the Island of Discovery.

Historic Holualoa Village in Kona has a rich farming past, dominated by coffee. Nowadays, the village has grown into a community of artists and galleries. On the first Friday of every month, the village comes together for a monthly block party after sunset.

In March and April of each year, the largest concentration of arts and culture on the island is the Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo. The festival culminates in a hula competition considered the pinnacle of the hula world. The artisan fairs held in conjunction with the festival have grown to include the finest Made In Hawaii products, cultural arts, fashion and more.

Each November, the Island pays homage to its coffee roots and hosts an annual festival celebrating two centuries of coffee heritage in Kona. This features ten days of festivities honoring culture, pioneers, farmers, artisans, musicians, dancers and coffee.

Different Regions

The different island districts include South Kohala, North Kohala, Hamakua, North Hilo, South Hilo, Puna, Kau, South Kona, and North Kona.

Kona Region

Located on the western side of the island, is the sunnier side and more touristed. It has a volcanic landscape, home to famed coffee farms and views of the Pacific Ocean. There is the black sand coast of Punaluu Beach.

Hilo Region

Hilo Town is The Big Island’s largest city, located on a stunning bay, and second largest of all the Hawaiian Islands. The city holds the states’ record for wettest city annually with a whopping 70+ inches of rain a year. This equates to an extremely lush city with stunning parks such as Liliu’okalani Garden, numerous colorful orchid gardens and other cultural attractions including museums. Outdoor adventure includes Saddle Road, Rainbow Falls State Park and Wailuku River State Park, featuring the Boiling Pots area and Pe’epe’e Falls.

Plan for lots of sunshine and rain! All the Hawaiian Islands have a wet side and dry side. Summer months on the Big Island are May through October where temperatures range between 85–90 °F. The winter falls are usually November through April where temperatures will be five to ten degrees cooler.
