CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL | FEBRUARY 3, 2018
Hawaiian culture has gone hand in hand with Japanese culture for over a century. In fact, Japanese peoples account for just under 20% of the population, which makes them the second largest ethnic group in Hawaii. For more than 65 years, the Cherry Blossom Festival has brought Japanophiles together to celebrate the rich island heritage with fashion snows, Japanese cooking, art exhibits, performance contests, and dancing. The crowning highlight of the event is the Festival Ball, where the Cherry Blossom Festival Queen and Court are crowned.
While you’re in Hawaii, enjoying the Cherry Blossom Festival, charter a yacht for a full day (or multiple day) sail through the pacific to get personal with the sacred guardians of the Hawaiian islands. February and March are peak season for whale watching. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous schedule a sailing lesson and finish with a breathtaking sunset cruise.
KONA BREWERS FESTIVAL | MARCH 10, 2018
Enjoy friends, music, food, and an incredible range of craft beers at this popular Festival, now in its 23rd year. Originally intended to celebrate the Kona Brewing Company, it now is an important fundraiser for non-profit organizations contributing to the conservation of the Hawaiian environment, promotion of cultural traditions, and support of the state’s youth. Thousands of people gather to sample island food and drink, from fresh fish to gourmet desserts. The Festival events include a 5k run/walk, a Trash Fashion Show, and a four-ounce brew tasting of handcrafted beers from both Hawaii and the mainland United States. It’s an entertaining event you don’t want to miss, filled with the spirit of Pualu (working together) and Malama Pono (respecting the land).
MERRIE MONARCH FESTIVAL | APRIL 1-7, 2018
Every April, Hawaii comes alive with live music and hula dancing. This week-long celebration features amazingly talented dancers, many of them young children, imitating the “Merrie Monarch” in traditional hula and folk dances. As early as August, the hula teachers “kuma hula” gather their students to begin training, with the most talented putting on performances during the Festival. Other notable events include the Invitational Hawaiian Arts Fair featureing local artisans and entertainers throughout the week, and an individual competition held for the title of Miss Aloha Hula. To conclude the Festival, a parade winds through downtown Hilo, showcasing the winners and celebrating all participants.
AUTHENTIC CUVÉE-CURATED EXPERIENCES
Experience these local customs first-hand by scheduling private Hula lessons with your own kuma hula. Cuvée’s own Experience Curator, Hoku, is a former professional Hula dancer, and she loves teaching visitors how to dance with the waves and the ocean breeze, telling stories with hand motions and rhythmic chanting. Pictures and videos will be recorded, so you can save and share your experience. Perhaps you can have a Hula competition of your own!
FISHING ADVENTURE & PRIVATE CHEF DINNER
During your visit, try your hand at shore fishing with an expert Cuvée-approved Fisherman. Chef Justin brings his passions to your line and your table with a guided trip to his favorite fishing spot on the Kailua Kona coastline. Enjoy local gourmet snacks and cold beverages while Justin teaches you how to catch fish you may have never seen before such as Po’opa’a, Mo’ano, and Nenui. Once you’ve caught your fill, Justin demonstrates traditional Hawaiian methods of cleaning and filleting your fresh fish, and then prepares a feast for dinner, accompanied by a chilled glass of Riesling or Cuvee’s Lorenzo Chianti.
