With free-flowing indoor/outdoor areas and large timber-framed windows, Kwitonda Lodge draws inspiration from region’s natural elements of mist and earth with sustainable construction from local materials like volcanic rock and hand-fired terracotta bricks to engage with the surrounding landscape. Designed with the idea of “bringing the outside in”, the layered interior design using artisanal-woven panels in rich deep colors, distinctive sculptural pieces and traditional dry-stone walling reflects the skill of craftspeople from the immediate Musanze district as well as other communities. The result is unique contemporary African style that combines naturally luxurious comfort with regional culture.
