Fishing in Sun Valley

Fly-fishing enthusiasts, Sun Valley is your new favorite destination. Sun Valley’s average of 300 days of sunshine means the conditions are almost always pleasant and the water isn’t quite so cold when you’re wading through the river. And there’s plenty of river to explore, with an incredible amount of public access points.

With bountiful rainbow trout, Big Wood River provides miles of classic trout fishing in close proximity to Sun Valley. Of course, if you’re staying at Villa Fleuve, you’re right on its bank. Warm Springs Creek, a tributary of Big Wood River right outside of Ketchum, also offers stocked (and wild) rainbow trout – and just because it’s a small creek doesn’t mean you won’t be surprised by the excessive size of your catch.

For even more adventure, head outside of town to the Lost River System, where time spent wading through the bends of the twisting river in the solitude of the high desert is rewarded by views of the Pioneer Mountains and fish exceeding 20 inches. Or cast a line for rainbow and brown trout with abundant wildlife for company (think raptors, moose, deer, and elk) in Silver Creek. An hour from town at the foot of the Sawtooth Mountains, venture to Salmon River. In addition to huge bull trout that can reach nearly 30 inches, summer in Sun Valley brings chinook salmon to Salmon River (and steelhead in the spring) – quite the prize for any angler in the Rockies.

Golf in Sun Valley

In Sun Valley, world-class golf combines with incredible views for an elevated experience. Begin with Trail Creek, an 18-hole championship course designed by esteemed designer Robert Trent Jones, Jr. With almost 7,000 yards of play, it is Sun Valley’s signature course. The challenging alpine course crosses over Trail Creek multiple times and provides stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

For a mountain links-style challenge, White Clouds features nine holes, 3,600 yards of play, and unparalleled panoramic views of the Wood River Valley. A challenging round of play is enhanced by views of Bald Mountain, Dollar Mountain, the Pioneer Mountains, Angel’s Perch, Devil’s Bedstead, and even Ernest Hemingway’s home for a unique experience in the clouds.

Or venture to Elkhorn Golf Club to test your skills on one of the most challenging courses in Idaho. Designed as a collaboration between Robert Trent Jones Senior and Junior, the course features a hilly front nine, a back nine riddled with water hazards, and stunning vistas from the Elkhorn hillsides to White Clouds.

Hiking & Biking in Sun Valley

In the summer, the mountains and valleys in Sun Valley are proudly displaying their greenery and waiting to be discovered. One of the best ways to experience the peace and beauty of nature is by hiking or biking. And there is no shortage of trails to explore. With 400 miles of singletrack and 30 miles of paved trails, every hiker and biker from beginner to expert can discover some of the most scenic trails in the country.

If you’re a mountain biking enthusiast, Bald Mountain is something to behold. With the longest purpose-built downhill trail in the country and over 3,100 vertical feet of lift-accessed mountain biking, a thrilling race down the mountain is not to be missed. If you’re hiking, allow the lifts to whisk you to the top of Bald Mountain and soak in stunning views of the valley as you hike down, or do the opposite and challenge yourself with a vertical ascent followed by a leisurely ride to the bottom.

For a more relaxing ride or walk, explore the 30 miles of paved trails meandering through town along the Wood River Trail. Or leisurely bike through the White Clouds trail network, which winds around the golf course. Access the trail just outside of Sun Valley Village, and enjoy incredible views of the mountains.

Horseback Riding in Sun Valley

On & In the Water in Sun Valley

From pristine high alpine lakes to Big Wood River’s popular swimming holes, there are plenty of ways to cool off during a Sun Valley summer. Rent a paddleboat or kayak to explore Sun Valley Lake, then hang onshore and get into a game of beach volleyball or horseshoes.

If you love paddleboarding amidst spectacular scenery, head to Redfish Lake, Alturas, Pettit Lake, or the warm water of Magic Reservoir. Or take a tube down the Big Wood or Salmon River. From a relaxing, scenic float to a thrilling whitewater rafting adventure, there are plenty of options on the river.

Discover Ketchum

When you need a break from outdoor recreation, a stroll through Ketchum will do the trick. Endless summer sunshine invites you to visit Sun Valley’s authentic mountain town, where a vibrant art scene and lively downtown are paired with stunning mountain vistas. Discover art galleries, restaurants, and shops as you meander through town.
